Father jailed for second time for killing his baby daughter

A FATHER who was convicted for a second time of battering his baby daughter to death has been jailed.

Craig Jamieson was back at the High Court in Glasgow yesterday to be sentenced for the murder of four-month-old Abbie in February 2008.

The 32-year-old had originally been found guilty two years ago, but the conviction was quashed after it had been ruled the then judge had mis-directed the jury.

Jamieson was ordered to serve a minimum 16 years following the first trial.

Lord Matthews yesterday said he was bound by a decision from the Court of Appeal in 2010 that prevented him imposing a lengthier sentence.

This followed the case of another criminal convicted again after a retrial and it was ordered he could not be given a harsher jail term than he first received.

Lord Matthews locked Jamieson up for a minimum 15 years and one month for what he called an “appalling offence” that resulted in “catastrophic” injuries. The 16-year sentence was reduced due to the 11 months Jamieson had spent behind bars before his conviction was quashed.

Jamieson – who claimed during the trial that he “loved” his daughter – smiled and waved at relatives as he was led handcuffed to the cells.

The court heard how Jamieson attacked his daughter at his flat in the city’s Dumbarton Road on 8 February, 2008. He had been left alone after Abbie’s mother, Nichola Haddock, 31, had gone to university.
