Fashion chain packs its bags and moves out

THE leading British fashion chain DAKS has closed its Multrees Walk store – insisting its returns "could not justify continuation".

A spokeswoman for the company said: "DAKS has benefited much from the experience of its sales from this particular shop, where our staff worked hard to provide a good service and to maximise the turnover.

"Unfortunately, the returns could not justify continuation. We continue, however, to value the loyalty of our many customers in Scotland."

She said DAKS was exploring the possibility of further "product distribution" throughout the UK, looking to reach customers in Edinburgh in a "different way".

Retail experts believe the move does not spell disaster for Multrees Walk, rather an opportunity for another retailer to make the empty store its home.

Graham Bell, from Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, said he suspected the company may have decided to look elsewhere, owing to its lease being up for renewal.
