‘Family man’ sentenced for bottle attack

A “HARD-WORKING family man” with no record of violence threw a broken bottle into the face of a man in a queue outside a nightclub.

David Pennycuick, of Wardieburn Drive, was ordered to pay his victim £750 and to perform 180 hours of unpaid work in the community at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday.

He previously admitted assaulting Ryan Caddow to his injury and permanent disfigurement in George Street on December 17 last year.

The court heard there was a verbal altercation between Mr Caddow and Pennycuick, 32. Mr Caddow told the accused to leave him alone but, said Fiscal Depute John Kirk, Pennycuick stepped forward and Mr Caddow pushed him away.

A bottle Pennycuick was holding fell and smashed. Pennycuick picked it up and threw it in the direction of Mr Caddow, striking him on the face.

Defence solicitor, Elspeth MacDougall, told Sheriff William Holligan that her client had been in employment since leaving school.
