The unique rotating boat lift, part of the Millennium Link project, has been listed in a British Waterways and Waterways Trust survey as one of their Seven Wonders of the modern waterways.
The nationwide survey was first carried out fifty years ago by Robert Aikman, a campaigner for British waterways, and was updated this year.
Many miles of inland waterways have been reopened since the first survey was conducted. Nearly 200 miles have been opened in just the last 12 months.
Iain Herbert, the general manager at The Falkirk Wheel, said: "This is absolutely brilliant news for everyone involved with The Falkirk Wheel. We’ve welcomed visitors from all over the UK and across the world since we opened.
"This is a very valuable endorsement for a truly impressive visitor attraction which really is like no other in the world."
The Falkirk Wheel and Sapperton Tunnel, in the Cotswolds, are the two new additions to the original list of Seven Wonders.
Dave Fletcher, the chief executive of British Waterways, said: "I’m delighted to see the Seven Wonders survey includes both the historic and the futuristic; waterway structures admired for their beauty and architectural grace as well as those which represent awe-inspiring engineering achievements."
