Falkirk Wheel locked in canal ‘wonders’ fight

CANAL enthusiasts were today launching a quest to identify the "Seven Wonders" of the inland waterway network.

British Waterways is seeking the views of the public, who will be invited to vote for their favourite canal feature from tomorrow.

As well as 19th century engineering feats, a likely candidate is thought to be the new Falkirk Wheel, which links the Union with the Forth and Clyde canals.

The three-month poll was being launched at the 21-flight Hatton Locks on the Grand Union Canal near Warwick today. Canals enthusiast Paul Atterbury, who is launching the initiative on behalf of British Waterways, said: "Britain’s canals are steeped in the fascinating history of the Industrial Revolution.

"As well as being at the forefront of innovative design, they feature many wonderful and awe-inspiring buildings and structures.

"I am delighted to be launching a campaign which draws attention to these cultural riches of the past and the future."

The Falkirk Wheel is the world’s first rotating boat lift. It transfers barges which would otherwise have to negotiate 11 locks.
