Fairtrade top award shared by shops

A SMALL Edinburgh shop and a national supermarket chain have shared this year's top prize at Edinburgh's annual Fairtrade awards.

The One World Shop, just off Princes Street, and Scotmid were both recognised for their long-standing achievements in promoting Fairtrade goods.

The awards were presented by Lord Provost George Grubb this morning at a special breakfast, where Ben Miller of Edinburgh University also picked up a prize, and YWCA Lochend was rewarded for its community work.

The event was held at the council's Waverley Court HQ as part of Fairtrade Fortnight. The awards were judged by Lord Provost George Grubb and former Lord Provost Lesley Hinds, from a shortlist based on nominations from the public.

Cllr Grubb said: "The work of the award-winners, and all those nominated, is really to be commended, and I was delighted to congratulate them personally this morning... The Fairtrade movement makes a real difference to the lives of those in communities less fortunate than our own."

The One World Shop was a supplier and campaigner for Fairtrade products long before they became generally available. Scotmid stocks a wide range of Fairtrade products, while Mr Miller has been involved as a volunteer with Fairtrade since 2005.
