Experts jump to the defence of frogs

SOME of the world's leading frog experts will be at Edinburgh Zoo this week to promote the Year of the Frog 2008, a global campaign to raise awareness about the extinction crisis facing the world's frogs, toads and newts.

Froglife, a national wildlife charity for amphibians and reptiles, has co-ordinated the event, which will be chaired by the eminent Professor Aubrey Manning, authority on animal behaviour and renowned BBC broadcaster.

Last month, scientists warned that half of Europe's amphibian species could disappear within forty years. In Scotland, some species have fared badly in the last century, having lost many of their countryside ponds through drainage.

"These are tough times globally for amphibians, so we're holding this event with Edinburgh Zoo to tell the public about the hard work that's going on to save these amazing animals." said Kathy Wormald, Froglife's chief executive. We're also keen to raise awareness of this important group of species."

The event is being held at Edinburgh Zoo on November 14.
