Edinburgh is ready to welcome troops for Armed Forces Day
THE national event for Armed Forces Day in 2011 is set to be held in the Capital, it has emerged.
Council leaders have confirmed that talks have taken place about the event, held for the first time this year, about Edinburgh hosting it in two years' time.
This year's event, which was created as an opportunity for the people of the UK to show their support for all those who make up the armed forces community, attracted 30,000 people to Chatham in Kent and featured a parade through the town by 450 veterans and 200 serving personnel.
Norman Ireland, events and special projects manager at the council, said that a request is expected for the event to be held in Edinburgh in June 2011.
Lord Provost George Grubb said: "While we have not yet had a formal invitation, we would of course be delighted for Edinburgh to form the centrepiece of the national Armed Forces Day events in 2011."
