Edinburgh’s Got Talent: Dancers step back into the limelight

DANCE school teacher Kerry Millar says the timing is right for her nine-piece troupe to break through and win the final of Edinburgh’s Got Talent.

The 26-year-old’s group Dansation, made up of girls ranging from ages 13 to 18, first entered the competition in its fledgling year back in 2009.

They made the top ten that year, but could only finish as high as eighth place with their hip hop-inspired performance.

“They were a bit devastated that they never got through because they worked so hard for it,” Kerry said.

“We had a couple of years off and just built up our technique. Looking back now, you can see a difference.

“They feel like they have got a good chance. They feel that they have come along so much better from what they have done before.

“They would love to win it. It would be their dream to perform at the Radio Forth Awards.”

All of the Dansation girls
taking to the stage for the Festival Theatre final later this month are from west Edinburgh and each of the performers have trained under Kerry from as young as the age of two.

This time round the group’s act is called Spirit and is set to The Calling’s pop anthem Wherever You Will Go.

“It’s a lyrical piece that we’re doing,” Kerry said.

“It’s to do with remembering someone that you’ve lost in your life. Even though their spirit’s gone, it’ll always live on and always be with them.”

Kerry, who took over the dance school four years ago, is a professional dancer herself and works as a show choreographer at the Prestonfield House Hotel.

Her pupils have ambitions to follow in her footsteps by either turning professional or becoming dance teachers.

One performer, Ashleigh Innes, is enrolled at the Dance For All theatre school in the Capital.

Kerry said the fact they were the only group in this year’s Edinburgh’s Got Talent final could be a real advantage.

“It’s about time they won something because they have worked so hard for so many years,” she said.
