Edinburgh homes are targeted in energy scheme

MORE homes in the Capital are to be targeted as part of a £60 million scheme to promote energy-saving measures across Scotland.

Rule changes to the Scottish Government's Energy Assistance Package will target more of the least energy efficient properties.

Insulation and heating system upgrades will be made available to eligible households in Edinburgh as part of the scheme.

Proposals for new regulations to bring in the new eligibility criteria will be laid before the Scottish Parliament over the next few weeks. Councils and housing associations across Scotland will also receive an extra 2.5 million this year to insulate cavity walls and lofts for tenants in social housing.

Housing and communities minister Alex Neil said: "We want every family in Edinburgh to live in a house that is energy efficient and doesn't cost a fortune to heat. Too many families are struggling with unaffordable fuel prices that can mean a choice between cooking the dinner and keeping the house warm."

Mike Thornton, director of the Energy Saving Trust in Scotland, said: "

The extension of the Energy Assistance Package will help householders across Scotland who find it hard to heat their home."
