Edinburgh city centre blaze ‘not suspicious’

A BLAZE which swept through a city centre building is not being treated as suspicious, fire chiefs have said.

Firefighters took several hours to put out the fire in the four-storey building on Edinburgh’s Hanover Street.

It was thought the blaze broke out on the ground floor, before spreading to the roof.

At the height of the incident, 60 crew battled the fire, which started on Thursday afternoon.

Group Commander Colin Bruce, of Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, said the fire was not being treated as suspicious, although it was too early to say what could have started it. Fire investigation teams are continuing their work at the site, along with insurance officials.

Council officials found the building to be “structurally sound”, meaning it will not need to be demolished.
