Developers saved £1.5m in deal with city

DEVELOPERS of the controversial £200 million development next to Haymarket Station drove a hard bargain with Edinburgh City Council, saving £1.5 million on its contribution to the trams project.

The council had originally wanted more than 4 million from Tiger Developments before granting planning permission for the project, it emerged at a public inquiry yesterday. But it agreed to accept just 2.5 million.

Businessman Ken Murray, who presented the inquiry with a 2,000-signature petition against the development, questioned Elaine Robertson, a principal planner and council witness about the agreement yesterday.

Contributions from developers are part of planning legislation, but the 4.14 million figure is believed to be one of the highest figures requested.

Plans for the development, backed by the council last June, were later called in by the Scottish Government because the site had been council-owned.
