Damp in Assembly Rooms set to cost £300k

THE cost of repairing damp problems in the ceiling of the Assembly Rooms' 400-capacity ballroom has been put at £300,000.

The Evening News revealed last month that the ballroom, which is one of Edinburgh's main Fringe venues, would be out of action for this year's festival after damp was discovered in some of the beams.

An initial investigation into the problem found that the damp has caused the ceiling to dip slightly and will require months of work to sort out. But the full survey has found the problem is worse than first thought and the estimated bill will be 300,000.

City leaders will also miss out on just under 70,000 in rent as the ballroom is out of action until September. The rest of the Assembly Rooms is unaffected and will still host some of the other Fringe events planned for this year's Festival.

A 12 million redevelopment of the Assembly Rooms is meant to get under way next year but it is understood the damp treatment work cannot wait until then.
