Cycle couriers get message out about their skill levels

CYCLING fans are to receive a special delivery this summer in the form of the European Cycle Messenger Championships.

In a first for Scotland, hundreds of cycle couriers from around Europe will visit over the weekend of June 15-17.

Now in its 17th year, the championships will offer a main package race, track racing at the Meadowbank Velodrome, a time trial in Holyrood Park, an evening of Rollapaluza Roller Racing and a fistful of trick and fun events.

The Red Bull Mini Drome, the world’s smallest velodrome, will challenge all fixed gear riders to test their skills and nerve and The Clan, Scotland’s famous cycle stunt team, will also perform.

City courier and organiser Eve Ballin said: “This is a celebration of urban cycling and of the bicycle as a working tool.

“These championships have been gathering force over the last 20 years and I’m sure the people of Edinburgh will turn out in force.”
