Crowds flock to Oban for 106th Mod
AN ESTIMATED 9,000 revellers have flocked to Oban for the 106th Royal National Mod.
The national festival of Gaelic culture last week drew huge crowds as musicians, dancers and community groups put on hundreds of shows in the west coast town.
The annual gathering hosts formal competitions in events such as Gaelic song, fiddling and bagpiping, while spoken word events include poetry reading and storytelling.
The Mod has been running almost every year since its inception in 1891, and organisers estimate that this year's event in Oban– a key feature of the Homecoming Scotland celebrations – has generated around 1.5 million for the local economy.
Argyll and Bute Council leader Dick Walsh said: "The standards in all classes were extremely high and, while I congratulate all competitors, I would like to especially thank those from Argyll and Bute who came here to compete and who are keeping the Gaelic language alive."
