Croft owners told land must be farmed

THE owners of a croft in Skye have been told to come up with plans to bring the land back into crofting use in a move seen as a test case in the battle to prevent sites being neglected or sold.

The action by the Crofters Commission could set a precedent for hundreds of other crofts which may be divided up and sold for housing.

The case at Harrapool, near Broadford, involves three owner-occupiers of a croft, none of which is used for agriculture.

An application by two owners to decroft part of the land to extend their garden was refused by the commission because it was "not a reasonable purpose" for decrofting at a time when there is demand to use the land.

The commission has demanded the residents produce re-letting proposals so the remaining land can be put to agricultural use.
