Clueless climbers to receive GPS lessons

CLIMBERS are to be given lessons in how to use their hi-tech equipment in a bid to save them from danger on Scotland's mountains.

In recent years Global Positioning System (GPS) devices have become hugely popular among those heading out into Scotland's countryside. But mountain safety experts claims people are placing themselves in danger by being unable to use the devices properly.

In response, the Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS) is running a series of training courses to put walkers on the right track.

Heather Morning said: "It is very obvious that many folk who own a GPS can only turn the thing on and get a grid reference. They have no idea how to use it as a tool to navigate off a mountain when they become disorientated."
