City university helps to set up biofuel centre

THE first biofuel research centre in Hong Kong has been established thanks to a partnership with Edinburgh Napier University.

The centre, set up by Napier and the City University of Hong Kong, will be the first of its kind in Hong Kong. It will address the rising global demand for sustainable and non-fossil-based fuels, and Hong Kong's urgent need to develop sustainable solutions to accommodate its ever-increasing volume of waste matter.

The new centre will focus on the development of renewable energy via second-generation biofuels from a diverse range of non-food crops and waste matter.

Napier is already home to the Biofuel Research Centre (BfRC) – the UK's first research centre dedicated to the development of sustainable biofuel.

Professor Dame Joan Stringer, principal and vice chancellor of Napier, said: "Scotland is at the forefront of renewable energy research, and this new partnership is an important step in the global search for new and more sustainable energy solutions.

"Sustainability is one of Napier's highest priorities."
