City homes missing out on broadband

MORE than 100,000 households in Edinburgh still do not have broadband internet, a study has shown.

The number falls short of government targets to get every home in the UK hooked up to a high-speed connection.

As a result of the figures, released by the Office of Communications and the General Office of Statistics Scotland, a provider is giving 1000 homes in the Capital free connection to the fastest service for a month to boost the city's representation.

Bosses at Virgin Media decided on Edinburgh as they felt it was one of the most under-provided cities for broadband in the UK.

Ashley Stockwell, brand and marketing managing director at Virgin Media, said:

"Fibre optic broadband is fast and future-proof, so surfers in Edinburgh will get a chance to experience the net as it should be – superfast and reliable."
