Chinese scroll fetches £32k

A CHINESE scroll collected by a Scottish banker who moved through the higher echelons of Shanghai society before the Second World War has been sold at auction in Edinburgh for £32,000.

The impressive Chinese hand scroll dating from between 1736-1795 came from a collection of Asian works of art owned by the late Maurice George Gordon of Peebles.

In the 1930s Mr Gordon moved to New York for the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. In 1939 he was posted to China and made many contacts and friends in Shanghai society.

He and his wife, Catherine, had a keen interest in Chinese works of art, a number of which were sold at Lyon & Turnbull’s inaugural sale of Fine Asian Works of Art in Edinburgh yesterday
