Champagne up for grabs if Wheeler spotted inspecting tram works on Leith Walk

TRADERS in Leith are offering a bottle of champagne for photos showing city transport leader Phil Wheeler "walking the Walk."

The Leith Business Association said it would present a bottle of bubbly to the first member of the public who manages to capture the councillor inspecting the tram works on Leith Walk.

The organisation claims Cllr Wheeler has failed to visit the tram works in Leith personally to hear the concerns of local businesses.

Alan Rudland, vice chairman of the association, said the stunt was intended to be a "light-hearted" joke at the councillor's expense.

He added: "We're simply reflecting the fact that rather than get out and see what's happening on the ground, we've had an issue with him 'walking the Walk'.

"He seems to be rather removed from what's actually happening."

Earlier this week, the council confirmed that transport bosses are to visit the tram works in the city centre after concerns were raised about a number of near misses involving pedestrians.

A panel made up of representatives of the council, the police and TIE will review several sites, including those in and around Leith Walk, after locals complained of confusing changes to the layout of junctions.
