Cash needed to win medals MSPs warned

SIGNIFICANT investment in sport is needed if Scotland is to win medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, MSPs were warned today.

Scottish sportsmen and women took home 29 medals from the last Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia last year.

But in a submission to Holyrood's finance committee today, national sports agency Sportscotland warned that "significant additional investment in elite sport" was required for Scotland to do well in 2014.

Lee Cousins, head of policy at Sportscotland, said: "Sportscotland have costed that for Scotland to compete and have a top eight finish in all sports and achieve a target of 45 medals, 33.7 million additional resources on top of current UK and Scottish investment in elite sport will be required between now and 2014."

He said the Games also had the ability to drive the development of Scottish sport, enthusing and engaging people to participate in sport and providing a focus for athletes to produce their best.
