Cash boost to pay for fence at historic mill

SAFETY fencing is set to be erected at a historic Lothian mill after the project received £5,000 towards its funding.

The fencing is set to be erected at the Poldrate Mill in Haddington to protect the historic mill wheel after the cash was awarded by the East Lothian Civic Pride Fund.

The Lamp of Lothian Trust requested 5,000 for fencing around the mill wheel and lade to protect members of the public as well as the historic mill.

East Lothian Provost Councillor Sheena Richardson said: "The Lamp of Lothian Trust has restored many of Haddington's most historic buildings, making a significant contribution to the character and aesthetic appeal of the town.

"This project balances the need to preserve and enhance the mill, while also protecting the public."

Gil Gray, general manager of the Lamp of Lothian Trust, said: "We are delighted to have been successful with our application to the Civic Pride Fund. The mill wheel at the Elizabeth Hamilton Buildings is a Haddington landmark, and many people, both local and visitors, stop to admire it."
