Cardinal bombarded with threatening phone calls
CARDINAL Keith O'Brien was bombarded with threatening phone calls at his Edinburgh home, it has emerged.
The Scottish Catholic leader had to involve police who bugged his home phone in order to trace the culprit behind the string of abusive rants. However, it has also been revealed that after police caught the perpetrator, Cardinal O'Brien was forced to apologise to another man who he had accused of making the calls.
Cardinal O'Brien had reportedly written to born-again Christian Peter Campbell, from Greenock, who had called him several times in the past, and accused him of carrying out the abuse.
But in a recent letter to Mr Campbell, Cardinal O'Brien is reported as saying: "I now realise that it was not you who was responsible in any way and I am glad that the perpetrator has been found".
A spokesman for the Cardinal was reported as saying: "It now seems that another caller made the calls in question."
