Car horror victim Fiona 'taken too soon' say friends

FRIENDS have paid tribute to a young woman who died after being hit by a car on Edinburgh's waterfront over the weekend.

Police confirmed that Fiona Clason, 24, of Trinity, lost her fight for life at the Western General Hospital on Monday.

Her death followed that of pensioner Charles Gray, 77, of Leith, who died on Sunday after being knocked down by a car as he crossed Lindsay Road on Friday.

Police are appealing for witnesses to both accidents as they continue their investigations.

Relatives of former Portobello High pupil Ms Clason were said to be too upset to speak about her death but friends paid tribute to her with a string of messages on her social networking website.

Ms Clason, who described herself as a fan of Hibs, F1 racing and American Wrestling, was also an avid reader and earlier this year graduated from the University of Dundee with a Master's degree in English literature.

On her Facebook site friends said she had been taken "too soon" and that "the world has become a darker place without you".

Claire Sharkie said: "Love you Fi. So many amazing times and memories. Truly a great friend. Miss you so much." Another friend, Philip McKinstry, added "You always knew what to do and say to cheer up the whole room. I'll miss you always."

Police said Ms Clason was struck by a silver Volkswagen Golf on Waterfront Avenue at around 8pm on Sunday. A 20-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the incident, and has subsequently been released pending further inquiries.

Officers said "further lines of inquiry" were being pursued and appealed for witnesses.

In particular they want to speak to passengers who were travelling on a Lothian number 38 bus which was in Waterfront Avenue at the time of the collision.

Ms Clason's death followed that of Mr Gray, from Academy Park, Leith, who died on Sunday after being knocked down by a car as he crossed Lindsay Road, 20 yards to the east of its junction with Hawthornvale just after 8pm on Friday.
