Campaigners get ready for electoral reform rally

ELECTORAL reform campaigners will hold a rally in the city centre tomorrow.

It will be one of 30 similar events organised nationwide by the Take Back Parliament campaign. The group was behind the crowds which gathered outside Nick Clegg's meeting with senior Lib Dems earlier this week to call for electoral reform.

In a nod to the colours worn by the suffragettes, protestors are asked to wear purple.

The rally will be the largest in Scotland and will gather outside the City Chambers in the High Street at 1:45pm. The group will then march to Mound Place and gather outside the Great Hall of the Church of Scotland General Assembly Building at 2:15pm.

The group says the Alternative Vote (AV) system, which the new government has pledged to put to referendum, does not represent sufficient reform.

The coalition's Pam Giddy said: "Thousands took to the streets dressed in purple to demand fair votes last week, and they will again on Saturday.

"Don't be fooled. AV may be a step in the right direction. But it is not a fair system and would not tie the number of seats held by a party to the share of the vote it received. All the politicians need to understand that we demand more. AV is simply not enough – we want fair votes now."
