A pensioner has died following a blaze at a flat in the early hours of this morning.

Fire crews were called to the property in Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, shortly after 1.30am on Wednesday.

Six firefighters using breathing equipment entered the flat and put out the flames but the woman’s body was discovered during a search of the property.

Assistant Chief Officer David Goodhew, of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service, said: “I would like to express that our thoughts are with the family and friends of this lady at this time.”

The service’s incident research and investigation section is working with Strathclyde Police to determine the cause of the fire.
