Call to protect businesses from energy firms

Livingston Labour MP Graeme Morrice is calling on energy regulator Ofgem to take urgent action to protect small businesses from unfair practices being adopted by energy suppliers.

He said current regulations allowed suppliers to bill firms for six years’ worth of incorrect bills, even when the supplier is at fault.

A recent survey of independent retailers found 36 per cent had been overcharged in the past year and more than one in four had received back bills from suppliers.

Mr Morrice is backing calls to limit back bills to 12 months, in line with protections for domestic customers.

He said: “Energy companies continue to take advantage of small businesses. This is harming the ability of small businesses in West Lothian to grow, invest and create jobs.”
