Build hope for cross-Glasgow rail link

MINISTERS have signalled that a long-planned cross-Glasgow rail link to enable trains to run direct from Edinburgh to the west coast could be approved by being built in phases, The Scotsman has learned.

The Glasgow Crossrail is seen as the "missing link" in Scotland's rail network, but it has been delayed by cost and doubts over its feasibility.

However, Stewart Stevenson, the transport minister, is understood to have told backers of the project that it may have more chance of winning government funding if the cost was spread.

Passengers currently have to transfer between Queen Street and Central stations.

A spokesman for Mr Stevenson said a business case from SPT was expected "very soon".
