FASTER broadband is to extend to a further 124,000 homes in Scotland by next spring BT announced today.

Bo’ness, Brechin Lockerbie, Scone and Tillicoutry are among the communities to be included in BT’s rollout of new generation copper lines which will be able to deliver broadband of up to 20 Mbps per second.

The faster broadband is already available at 1.5m homes and businesses in Scotland with Burntisland, Dumfries, Fort William and Kirriemuir among the latest places to be upgraded.

By early next year three quarters of homes in Scotland will be able to connect via the faster broadband - while 40 per cent will have access to superfast fibre optic connections - which are being rolled out in a separate programme.

Alex Neil, Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment said: “This latest announcement from BT is very much welcomed. Broadband is a vital part of the essential infrastructure of Scotland and faster broadband for businesses and households will play a key role in Scotland’s future success.

“Today’’s announcement shows the role the private sector has in helping the Scottish Government deliver our Digital Infrastructure Action Plan moving ust a step closer to achieving world class digital connectivity across Scotland..

Brendan Dick, BT Scotland director said: “The rapid roll out of faster broadband offers a great opportunity for Scotland. It is an important part of BT’s plans to help ensure the nation is able to take full advantage of the communications revolution.”
