Bridge Stitches knitting project unpurled at last

A SCOTTISH community's quirkiest contribution to the Year of Homecoming celebrations was unveiled yesterday.

More than 500 metres of knitting and crocheting samples have been stretched across the entire length of the Skye Bridge.

The spectacular display of home-made items, ranging from a 15-metre knitted snake to large panels, scarves and small rectangles, were pieced together to cover one of the main spans of the bridge, linking the island to the mainland.

The project, Stitches on the Bridge, started as a contribution to mark Homecoming Scotland by a local textile arts group, Luib na Luban.

But contributions to the unique arts project flooded in from as far afield as China, the United States and Australia.

Yesterday morning, a team of 20 volunteers got together to drape the finished display across the ramparts of the bridge.
