Boy, 3, infected with swine flu

A BOY of three is the latest person in Scotland to contract the swine flu virus, health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said yesterday.

Six possible cases of the H1N1 virus, and one probable, are being investigated, the Scottish Government said.

The latest confirmed case, in the Greenock area, brings the total confirmed cases of the infection in Scotland to nine and the number in the UK to 102. Five people who on Saturday were suspected of having the infection have been cleared, Ms Sturgeon said. Meanwhile, 14 more cases have been diagnosed in England.

Ms Sturgeon said: "There are now five confirmed cases in the Greenock area, three in Forth Valley and one case in Ayrshire and Arran.

"Risk to the public continues to be low, however it is important to remain vigilant."

Of the six possible cases, two are in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area, two in the Lothian area, one in Lanarkshire and one in Ayrshire and Arran.

It emerged on Friday that a 45-year-old woman, her son, five, and a 16-year-old had tested positive for the virus in the Greenock area.

They were said to be experiencing mild symptoms.
