Blaze sparks collapse fears
FIREFIGHTERS had to retreat from a burning disused tyre factory yesterday amid fears that it could collapse on top of them.
Nineteen officers fought the blaze at the former Continental factory on the Newbridge Industrial Estate. The alarm was raised at 1.40pm after smoke was seen coming from the building.
Four firefighters using breathing equipment entered the building while their colleagues fought the blaze with two fire hoses.
After officers were called out of the building due to the potential for collapse, the fire was brought under control using hoses, and firefighters left the scene just after 7.30pm.
