Bin collection will continue despite action
RUBBISH collections should continue to operate as normal the council said today, despite industrial action by the city's bin men.
The council said night-time collections would continue as normal, with daytime collections and trade waste picked up on the next available collection if missed.
The update was published after it emerged that council refuse workers had last week begun working to rule in protest over proposals to cut their pay.
It is understood the move could see refuse collectors on a wage of around 230 a week lose around half of the 120 they receive in bonuses – around 3,000 a year.
One bin man who contacted the Evening News said his wage would be slashed from 242 to 170 a week.
A council spokeswoman said the proposed cuts are among a series of modernisation measures which are currently being considered by the council.
