The 10th Inverness Film Festival, which is showcasing a number of Scottish premieres, has kicked off with the promise of being “the biggest and best yet”.

The movie extravaganza will feature first showings of films from across the globe, including Samoa and Germany – and Scotland.

Festival director Paul Taylor said: “We have got a preview of some of the biggest films that are going to be out over November, December and January.

“There are some films that are going to be up there when the awards come out.”

These include a remake of the Charles Dickens’ classic rags-to-riches tale Great Expectations, starring Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter, and directed by Mike Newell of Four Weddings and a Funeral fame.

It will also show a screening of the much-hyped Seven Psychopaths, about a struggling screenwriter who gets mixed up in the LA criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster’s beloved Shih Tzu dog.

It stars Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken and Woody Harrelson, and is directed by Oscar winner Martin McDonagh.

Mr Taylor is also looking forward to the Scottish premiere of Shell, directed by Grampian-based Scott Graham and set in the remote Highlands examining the relationship between 17-year-old Shell with her father at a small petrol station where they work.

The festival opened on Wednesday night and runs through to Sunday.
