Author's charity mystery to go under the hammer

A UNIQUE manuscript by Edinburgh-based author Alexander McCall Smith is being auctioned off for charity and there's still plenty of time for people to get their bids in.

McCall Smith, famous for his No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books, has written a new mystery to raise funds for the 500 Miles prosthetic limbs charity.

The signed manuscript will come with a set of diamonds worth 6,500 and the chance to have them set in the buyer's own choice of jewellery at Edinburgh firm Hamilton & Inches. The diamonds will play a key role in the story.

Former lawyer Olivia Giles, who lost her lower arms and legs after contracting meningitis, asked the author to pen the story for her charity, which raises money to help amputees in Malawi and Zambia.

She said: "This unique manuscript will give his readers the chance to own their very own McCall Smith story."

The auction is being held on 3 October.
