Artists in Faslane protest against 'immoral and stupid' Trident

ACTORS and authors yesterday backed a campaign at Faslane to stop the replacement of the UK's nuclear weapons programme.

Roger Lloyd Pack, who starred in Only Fools and Horses and The Vicar Of Dibley, spoke out at an organised protest at the nuclear submarine base in Argyll.

He joined other artists, including author AL Kennedy and folk singer Leon Rosselson, to speak out against the government's decision to reinvest in a nuclear deterrent. The group performed at the Power of the Word event at Faslane, part of a year-long blockade of the naval base.

Describing the decision on Trident as "wrong, immoral and stupid", Lloyd Pack said: "When the existence of the planet is threatened by our assaults on our environment, it's madness to add to the danger by developing nuclear weapons. They're expensive, not safe, and we can never use them."

The Faslane365 campaign has seen protesters travel from all over the world to the gates of the base to voice their concern.

Thousands have taken part and more than 750 people have been arrested since the blockade started in October last year.

Police said five people were arrested at yesterday's protest for minor public order offences.
