Arbroath pensioner’s body recovered from sea

THE body of an elderly pensioner, recovered from the sea at Whiting Ness, near Arbroath, on Sunday, has been formally identified as that of 85 year-old Edwin Gillespie from Arbroath.

Mr Gillespie, a former Merchant Navy seaman who was said to have been suffering from dementia, had been reported missing from his home in the town’s Elmfield Avenue on Friday morning.

He had been described as a fit and active pensioner who walked frequently in the Arbroath area and enjoyed local walking trails.

A Tayside Police spokesman said: “There are no suspicious circumstances and as with all sudden deaths a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
