Anti-vandalism hedge is a berry good idea

A BERRY hedge is to be planted in a Leith park in the area's latest green initiative.

Two days of planting in Pilrig Park will begin on Friday, organised by environmental group Greener Leith and supported by local councillors.

The Berry Hedge Project, funded by O2 and the council, will see various types of raspberries and brambles grow in the park, with the organisation hoping it will act as a long-term deterrent to vandalism.

The initiative comes just weeks after a separate project to plant trees bearing rare apples in Leith tenement back greens was announced.

Alastair Tibbitt, chairman of Greener Leith said: "We're really glad that we received funding for this project from O2 and the council. When this wall is vandalised it really spoils the feel of Pilrig Park. We hope this hedge will become a valued improvement to this highly visible corner of the park."

Leith Walk councillor Louise Lang added: "I am delighted to see such an innovative project."

Volunteers who would like to help plant the hedge should turn up on either Friday or Saturday between 11am and 1pm.
