Amnesty takes Syria plea to Russian base

ACTIVISTS from Amnesty International are to gather outside the Russian Embassy today to mark 500 days since the uprising in Syria began.

The human rights organisation said 24 campaigners – representing the number of people said to have been killed each day in the clashes – would meet outside the Melville Street base to call on Russia to take a leading role in brokering peace.

Director of Amnesty International Scotland, Shabnum Mustapha, said: “500 days since the uprising began, the international community must grasp its moral, political and legal obligations and unite to stop the violence in Syria.

“A divided international community is failing the people of Syria.”
