All aboard to celebrate Royal Yacht's ten years

THERE will be celebrations this weekend to mark the tenth anniversary of the Royal Yacht Britannia's arrival at the Port of Leith as a tourism attraction.

She berthed alongside Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre on October 19, 1998 after making 968 official visits around the world in the previous 45 years.

Since then, more than 2.8 million people have visited the ship.

Free cake will be on offer from the gift shop on Sunday, and there will be a treasure trail for children.

Britannia Chief Executive Bob Downie said: "For over 40 years, the Royal Yacht Britannia sailed over one million miles on nearly one thousand official visits for the Royal Family.

"We hope both locals and visitors will come down on Sunday and celebrate with us."
