All aboard high-speed tilting trains

RAIL passengers in Edinburgh are set to benefit from 106 new high-speed tilting rail carriages agreed for the West Coast Main Line.

The UK Government has placed an order with engineers Alstom to deliver more than 7420 extra seats on the route – which links Edinburgh to Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham.

The new Pendolino carriages – which will create four new 11-car trains and lengthen 31 existing trains – should be in full service by December 2012.

There is an option to buy a further 42 carriages by 2013 to meet rising passenger numbers.

The line – which is currently undergoing a massive 8.8 billion overhaul – is set to see a 45 per cent increase in long-distance services in December this year.

UK Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly said: "The 8.8bn upgrade of the West Coast Main Line will cut journey times and deliver more frequent services."
