95-year-old woman hit by van

A 95-year-old woman was left with a fractured hip after being hit by a van in Edinburgh yesterday.

The incident happened at around 5.15pm on Strathearn Road in the Marchmont area of the city.

The woman was walking eastwards towards Beaufort Road approaching the Farmer Autocare centre when a red Volkswagen Transporter van drove out from the car park area and collided with her at very slow speed.

She was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where it was discovered she had suffered a fractured hip.

Officers are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

In particular, officers want to speak to a ‘good Samaritan’ who stopped to help the woman but left before they had the chance to speak to her.

A police spokesperson said: “Due to the time of day, Strathearn Road would have been busy with cars and pedestrians and someone may well have witnessed this incident.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw anything to get in touch as a matter of urgency.

“Officers are also particularly keen to trace a woman who stopped to help the injured party just after the incident but left prior to police arrival.”

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131.
