The fire was discovered about 9.20am on Sunday at a barn at Cairdhillock Farm, Kingswells, Aberdeen.
A force spokesman said: “By the time Grampian Police and Grampian Fire and Rescue arrived, the bales and roof of the barn were well alight. The cost of the damage is estimated to be a low five figure sum. “
He added: “ A man who was jogging in the area at the time told the farmer about the fire. Unfortunately, the jogger left the scene before we had a chance to speak to him. We would ask the jogger to contact us as he may have important information that could help with our enquiries.”
