20,000 join in independence conversation

THE Scottish Executive's "national conversation" website on the country's constitutional future has passed the 20,000 hits mark.

It was launched as First Minister Alex Salmond published the SNP administration's white paper on a referendum on independence last week.

Ministers want to see a wide-ranging debate about the country's constitutional future.

Daily hits on the website have averaged about 3000 over the first week.

This is well up on the response to the Clearing the Air website, set up ahead of the smoking ban becoming law.

More than 1200 comments have been posted on the "national conversation" website.

In addition, more than 12,000 have viewed the white paper online, with almost 5000 downloads for printing.

"In the first week it's got off to a great start," said an Executive spokeswoman. "We're very pleased with the way it's going."
