£2.6m council house boost for East Lothian

DOZENS of new council houses will be built in East Lothian thanks to a £2.6 million funding boost from the Scottish Government.

The county has received the largest share of the 25m national fund to kickstart council house building in Scotland.

The funding will subsidise the building of 105 homes in Macmerry and Dunbar. Local company Hart Builders has already been chosen for the 3.8m contract to build 35 homes in Brierbush Road, Macmerry, with work due to start next month.

Councillor Stuart Currie, the council's housing leader, said: "This will help keep our construction industry building during the economic downturn. The award for East Lothian is the largest in Scotland and reflects the acute challenges that we face."

About 5500 people are waiting for a council house in East Lothian.
