100,000 drop in visitors to the Castle
EDINBURGH Castle recorded almost 100,000 fewer visitors than last summer, with the 13 per cent drop blamed on poor weather and the credit crunch.
Historic Scotland has seen a ten per cent drop in numbers visiting all its attractions between April and mid-September compared to the same period last year.
The average temperature in August, the busiest month in the tourist calendar, was just 16.5 degrees. The Met Office said it was the sixth dullest year on record.
But the Castle remains the most popular tourist attraction in Scotland, with 639,682 people passing through its gates.
Linlithgow Palace also saw visitor numbers fall, by 17 per cent.
A Historic Scotland spokeswoman said: "Scotland has had a bad summer weather-wise and that could be a factor, along with the economic uncertainty due to the credit crunch."
