School sends home 160 pupils in flu scare

SWINE flu fears have forced one of Scotland's top schools to send home a third of its pupils and some members of staff, it was revealed last night.

More than 160 pupils and seven teachers at Kirkcudbright Academy in Dumfries and Galloway have been sent home after displaying symptoms authorities fear may be the result of swine flu.

Dr David Breen, consultant in public health medicine, said: "We are confident all appropriate measures have been taken by GP colleagues, the academy, education department staff and NHS public health teams."

The outbreak comes after official figures released yesterday showed that the number of people contracting swine flu in Scotland had dropped in the last week to 17,487.

But health secretary Nicola Sturgeon warned the figures could change: "We must prepare for an almost continual rise in cases throughout winter."
