Prof's gene genius wins Edinburgh Medal

THE 21st Edinburgh Medal has been awarded to Professor Jon Beckwith.

Professor Beckwith, the American Cancer Society Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics of Harvard Medical School, led the team that first succeeded in isolating a gene from the chromosome of a living organism, a major breakthrough in the understanding of the processes of life.

Professor Beckwith said: "I am particularly happy to receive the Edinburgh Medal because of its recognition of the importance of social involvement of scientists and because of the impressive list of previous recipients of the Medal with whom I am proud to be associated."

Professor Beckwith's Medal Address, delivered to a capacity audience at the City Chambers on Tuesday, was entitled 'The Persistent Influence of Failed Scientific Ideas'.

The talk examined the 'criminal chromosome', 'male math gene' and 'gene for intelligence' which are all examples of popular myths that arose out of the publication of scientific papers.

Dr Simon Gage, Director of the Edinburgh International Science Festival said: "We're delighted Jon Beckwith has been awarded the 21st Edinburgh Medal. We are honoured that he has come to Edinburgh during the Science Festival to receive his award."
