Medics flock to Capital for conference
A MAJOR medical conference is among ten new major business events which have been secured for the Capital over the festive season.
New figures released by the Edinburgh Convention Bureau (ECB) reveal that events worth 5.2 million have been secured in recent weeks.
The ten events, which involve international and national associations and corporate and government conferences, will take place between January 2010 and November 2011.
The largest event is the International Congress of the European Hernia Society. The event will be staged over three days at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) in November 2011. It is anticipated the meeting will be attended by 1,500 delegates and be worth 1.6m to the local economy.
Another event worth in excess of 1m is the 2011 Women Walking with God conference, with 1,200 delegates, also at the EICC.
Sue Stuart, chief executive of the ECB, said: "It is very pleasing to be able to end the year on a high note.
"The past 12 months have been challenging but we have risen to the challenge, helping deliver significant economic benefit."
